In Defense of the Rationality Assumption

چکیده
It has become commonplace for economists to assert that human beings are not fully economically rational. Many psychologists and behavioral economists now maintain that economic agents do not reason very well, that these agents often do not know what is good for them and that they behave in odd, non-reasoning, inconsistent ways. Paradoxes and inconsistencies supposedly surface in economic behavior, making agents appear to be unpredictable, but interesting and wonderfully “complex.” In this paper, however, it is argued that economic agents are, in fact, quite rational, are predictable under strict ceteris paribus assumptions, and are much simpler and uninteresting than psychologists and behavioral economists might have us believe. In support of the contention of rationality, Tversky’s classic behavioral experiment of irrelevant alternatives is performed again but results are obtained in disagreement

Investigating the Rationality of Behavioral Economics in Mental Accounting by Studying Laboratory Economics
The purpose of this study is to investigate the rationality of behavioral economics in mental accounting by studying laboratory economics. Undoubtedly, economic man, whose fundamental characteristic is rationality, is the starting point for economic analysis. In conventional economics, the premise of rationality is the cornerstone and the premise of all economic theories. However, critics of ec...
متن کاملRational Choice Theory: An Overview
It seems easy to accept that rationality involves many features that cannot be summarized in terms of some straightforward formula, such as binary consistency. However, this recognition does not immediately lead to alternative characterizations that might be regarded as satisfactory, even though the inadequacies of the traditional assumptions of rational behavior standard used in economic theo...

متن کاملDesigning Better Resource Allocation Strategy against Human Adversaries in Security Games
Stackelberg games have garnered significant attention in recent years given their deployment for real world security, such as ARMOR, IRIS and GUARDS. Most of these systems have adopted the standard game-theoretical assumption that adversaries are perfectly rational, which may not hold in real-world security problems due to the bounded rationality of human adversaries and could potentially reduc...

Brandenburger, Friedenberg, and Keisler [Econometrica 76 (2008), 307352] show that rationality and common assumption of rationality (RCAR) is impossible in a complete and continuous type structure. We show, by inroducing an alternative notion of “weak assumption”, that rationality and common weak assumption of rationality (RCWAR) is possible in a complete and continuous type structure. This pos...
